How to Choose the Right Pipette

Dropper bottles turn up in two very different settings - the medicine cabinet and the bathroom shelf, and do a good job in both. The format hasn't changed much because it works: precise dispensing, a clean seal, and glass that won't interfere with what's inside. Here's a look at where they're used and how to put together the right combination for your product.

Medical Uses

Glass has always been the material of choice for medical packaging - it's chemically inert, easy to sterilise, and doesn't leach anything into the product. Dropper bottles add precise dispensing on top of that, which is why they've been standard in clinical and home-use medical products for so long.

Eye Drops & Ear Drops

The classic use. A glass dropper delivers a controlled single drop directly to the eye or ear without touching or contaminating the area. Amber glass is used where the formulation needs light protection; clear glass where the patient or clinician needs to see the remaining volume.

Tinctures & Herbal Remedies

Tinctures are typically alcohol-based extracts dosed in millilitres, often from a 30ml or 50ml bottle. The graduated pipette, marked with measurement lines on the glass tube - is the natural partner here. Our 30ml amber bottles with the 77mm black graduated pipette are one of the most popular combinations for exactly this reason.

CBD & Wellness Oils

CBD oil packaging has largely settled on amber glass dropper bottles. UV protection matters - the cannabinoids degrade in light - and the tamper-evident pipette closure has become near-universal in this market. An amber 10ml, 30ml or 50ml with a black tamper-evident pipette is a solid, market-appropriate choice.

Pharmaceutical Solutions

In labs and clinical settings, dropper bottles store and dispense reagents, staining solutions and diagnostic liquids. Chemical resistance, precise volume control and no contamination risk are the requirements, which is why an all-glass construction stays the right answer.

Cosmetic Uses

Dropper bottles have become one of the go-to formats for premium skincare. The glass looks considered. The drop-by-drop dispensing suits high-value, concentrated products. And the format signals quality in a way that a pump or flip-cap just doesn't.

Facial Serums

Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, these are used in small, precise amounts. A dropper bottle is built for that. It also keeps oxygen out better than a wide-bore pump, which matters for antioxidant-based formulations that degrade on contact with air.

Facial & Body Oils

Rosehip, argan, jojoba, squalane - carrier oils are a natural fit for dropper packaging. The pipette gives users control over how much they dispense, and the amber or dark glass keeps the oil stable for longer. Our 30ml and 50ml sizes are the most popular for facial oil brands.

Essential Oils & Aromatherapy

Essential oils are concentrated, volatile and sensitive to heat and light. The dropper bottle - usually amber, blue or green - is the standard packaging for this category. Blue glass has a strong association with aromatherapy and works well as a brand differentiator on shelf.

Independent & Craft Brands

If you're making in smaller batches, dropper bottles give your product a finished, professional look without a big investment. Available from small pack quantities through to pallet orders, so the packaging can grow with the brand.

Pipettes & Accessories

The pipette is what your customer touches every time they use the product. Getting the right one matters - it has to fit, reach the bottom of the bottle, and look intentional. A mismatched pipette colour undermines an otherwise considered package.

All our dropper bottles use a GL18 neck finish, and every pipette in the range is specified to match by bottle size and glass colour:

Pipette Fits Colour Notes
GL18 63mm White 15ml (Amber, Blue, Green) White Tamper-evident
GL18 77mm Black Graduated 30ml (Amber, Blue, Green) Black Graduated markings, tamper-evident

For Light-Sensitive Formulations

Need More Than Amber? Consider Miron Violet Glass

Amber glass is excellent - it's our most popular choice and right for the majority of products. But for formulations where maximum protection really matters, Miron violet glass goes a step further.

How it works: Standard coloured glass blocks light broadly. Miron glass operates selectively - blocking the visible spectrum (380–780nm) that accelerates oxidation and degradation, while allowing beneficial UV-A and infrared wavelengths through. For natural formulations built on botanical extracts, cold-pressed oils and active organics, that selective filtering helps preserve colour, aroma and potency for longer.

Worth considering for high-value botanical formulations, CBD concentrates, herbal tinctures, or any serum where active ingredient integrity is the core claim.

Glass Colour Guide

Amber - the standard for light-sensitive products. Blocks most UV and visible light. If in doubt, start here.

Green - similar light-filtering properties to amber with more shelf distinction. A natural fit for herbal and botanical brands.

Blue - popular in aromatherapy and wellness. Moderate light filtration and a strong shelf presence.

Clear - lets the product speak for itself. Best where colour and clarity of the liquid is part of the appeal.

Black — maximum light protection and a strong luxury aesthetic. A growing choice for premium skincare.

Violet (Miron) - selective light filtration beyond standard glass. For high-value natural formulations. See the Miron range →

Tamper-Evidence & Child-Resistant Options

All our pipette closures include a tamper-evident transfer ring as standard. Child-resistant closures are available across the medical range - worth considering for tinctures, CBD oils and anything with significant alcohol content.
