Plastic Free July 2026:
The Truth About Recycling - And Why Glass Is Different

174 million people are going plastic-free this July. Here's what that means for product brands - and why glass is the only genuinely circular packaging choice.

Every July, 174 million people across 190 countries take the Plastic Free July challenge. But for product brands, this moment goes deeper than swapping a takeaway cup. It's an opportunity to examine what your packaging is actually made of, what really happens to it at end of life - and whether there's a better option already sitting in plain sight.

The truth about plastic recycling in the UK

Plastic recycling sounds straightforward. You rinse the bottle, put it in the right bin, and assume it gets dealt with. The reality is considerably more complicated - and more sobering.

UK households throw away an estimated 90 billion pieces of plastic packaging every year - around 1.7 billion pieces every single week. Of all post-consumer plastic waste generated in the UK, over half is burned for energy generation, while less than a third is actually recycled.

The situation is getting harder, not easier. According to a 2025 industry report, the UK lost 22% of its domestic plastics recycling capacity between 2023 and 2025. Facilities are closing faster than new ones are opening - meaning the gap between what gets collected and what gets recycled is widening. More than half of plastic packaging collected for recycling in the UK is currently exported, with Turkey the main destination.

And even when plastic does get recycled, the material degrades. Each recycling cycle weakens the polymer chains. Plastic can only go around a limited number of times before it becomes unprocessable - and ends up in landfill or incineration anyway.

The key point

A plastic container labelled "recyclable" doesn't mean it will be recycled. And even if it is recycled once, it won't be recycled indefinitely. The material degrades with every cycle - and eventually, it runs out of road.

Why glass is genuinely different

Glass isn't a greenwash alternative. It's a fundamentally different material with fundamentally different end-of-life properties.

Glass can be recycled endlessly without any degradation in quality. A glass bottle melted down and remade is identical in performance and appearance to virgin glass. There is no ceiling on the number of recycling cycles. The EU achieved a 75.6% recycling rate for glass packaging, rising to an 80.2% collection rate - compared to just 41% for plastic packaging over the same period. The infrastructure exists, the collection rates are higher, and the output is consistent.

Glass is also chemically inert. It does not leach compounds into its contents. It doesn't absorb flavours or odours. It doesn't react with acids, oils, alcohols or essential oils. For food, drink, cosmetic and medical products - the product that goes in is the product that comes out. Plastic, by contrast, is known to migrate chemical compounds into its contents over time, particularly with heat, oils and extended storage.

What Plastic Free July means for product brands

86% of Plastic Free July participants say the changes they make during the month stick around year-round. Consumer behaviour isn't shifting just for July - it's shifting permanently.

89% of premium brands surveyed in 2025 reported plans to switch from plastic to glass packaging by end of 2026. That shift is being driven by consumer demand, retailer pressure and the growing expectation that premium products come in premium - and responsible - packaging.

54% of European consumers chose a brand specifically because of the packaging it used, and 86% believe that 'easy to recycle' is the most important packaging feature. Glass scores clearly on both counts: it's immediately recognisable as premium and it's genuinely, infinitely recyclable.

For brands selling food, drink, cosmetics, home fragrance, medical products or fragrance - packaging in glass is the most straightforward way to make a credible, factually grounded sustainability claim. The material does the talking.

Glass packaging for every product category

Switching to glass doesn't mean starting from scratch. We hold thousands of product lines across every category, in UK stock, with flexible order quantities and wholesale pricing.

When standard glass isn't enough - Miron violet glass

For products where light exposure is a genuine concern - CBD oils, essential oils, natural cosmetics, herbal tinctures and botanical extracts - standard clear or amber glass is not the most protective option available.

Amber glass blocks UV wavelengths. But it does not block high-energy visible (HEV) light - the blue and violet end of the visible spectrum - which research indicates also contributes to the degradation of light-sensitive organic compounds. Miron violet glass was specifically developed for the storage of these organic substances. It blocks the complete spectrum of damaging visible light while remaining permeable to UV-A and infrared wavelengths associated with preservation.

As the UK's official Miron distributor, we hold the full range in UK stock with trade pricing and no minimum order on most lines.
